The "Seinfeld Strategy"

So you've probably noticed that since January of this year Bodyworks has started something new to motivate members.

We started an "Accountability Calendar". So far it's been about five months and members (and staff) are feeling more motivated than ever!

So why is it that having a visual representation of your efforts motivates you? Jerry Seinfeld might have the answer.

The "Seinfeld Strategy"

Most of us have heard of Jerry Seinfeld. Although going to the gym might not be something that's "funny" to you, the strategy that this comedian uses can easily be applied to the gym: The Seinfeld Strategy.

Jerry Seinfeld uses his strategy of marking an X next to each day that he writes. In our case, we write a big X (or place a sticker) next to each day that we come to the gym. Seinfeld explained, “After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job is to not break the chain.”

Seeing your progress on a large calendar each time you're at the gym is going to give you a wake up call in regards to how consistent you're being. Having your name on display is a great way for your gym buddies to keep you accountable as they will be able to see your progress as well.

You don't have to be extreme; you just have to be consistent.
